Antti Leino's dissertation

Antti Leino defended his doctoral thesis “On Toponymic Constructions as an Alternative to Naming Patterns in Describing Finnish Lake Names” on 2nd March. The defence took place at the Department of Finnish language, but the thesis was multidisciplinary. The thesis combines a computational analysis of a comprehensive corpus of Finnish lake names with a theoretical background in cognitive linguistics.

Evaluation of IT research in Finland

The Academy of Finland announced at the end of February that Finnish IT research will be evaluated. The timetable of the evaluation is very tight: we have to present the Department's and HIIT's reports by 5 th April. Also, an international panel will visit us between 25 and 29 June 2007. A total of 27 Finnish departments and laboratories in computer science at universities and VTT will be evaluated. Greger Lindén is editing both reports, and the work also keeps the professors and part of the administration busy.

Diary

Jouni Sirén works as a part-time teacher at the CS Dept. His week included, for example, checking exams, studying Russian, hanging out in IRC and lots of participation in Student Union work.
