The doctoral thesis work in the participating units is typically organized in small research groups, in which a post-doctoral or senior researcher has at most two or three graduate students under his/her daily supervision, giving the students the opportunity to directly learn working practices, scientific reporting, etc. from this researcher. These senior researchers are supervised by the professors.
Each student is assigned a support team of two persons (typically one professor and one docent or post-doc). The team meets at least twice a year with the student to discuss the progress of the student, and to hear the student's presentation. Students can of course also contact members of their support teams between the annual follow-up meetings for advice and direction. The team members can also possibly be used as pre-examiners of the student's dissertation manuscript.
If the student (or the support team) cannot attend the poster session, the student should have a meeting with the support team and likewise return a report on how the meeting succeeded to the Director of Hecse (hecse-admin@cs.helsinki.if), the support team and the supervisor.
In general, each student is responsible for his or her work and progress. The support team will not write a separate report, if it does not consider it necessary. The support team will give its feedback directly to the student who should take it into account in his or her reports.
The deadline for returning the report and the plan to Hecse is 31 March 2008.
The annual poster session will be held on 21 October 2008 during Hecse's Autumn School at Seikkailulaakso, in Emäsalo, Porvoo.
