Hecse admits new students roughly once a year. Students are accepted to pursue their doctoral degree full-time in four years. The number of vacant funded positions varies yearly. Positions without funding (adjunct positions) are also available and entitle the student to participate in Hecse events. Students with already guaranteed funding (holding a research position or employed by university research projects) are encouraged to apply for these adjunct positions.

PhD positions

Hecse is offering eight (8) funded PhD positions in the applications rounds in 2007.

Duration of Hecse funding

The funded doctoral student positions will start on 1 January, 2008 at the earliest. Funding is provided for a maximum of 48 months.

Location

The positions are located either in the premises of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki or in one of the laboratories of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Helsinki University of Technology.

Salary

The universities are using the new salary system. Doctoral student positions have been assessed (in the teacher and research staff system) on the job demand levels 1-3 (1.512,89 - 1.785,65 euro). In addition, a personal supplementary compensation of maximum 46 % will be paid. It is to be phased gradually during the transition period.

Student background and expectations

The applicant is expected to have a Master or Licentiate degree, as well as an interest in scientific research and the work of a researcher. The applicants, if accepted, are expected to engage themselves in full-time research and study for a maximum of four years. They are also expected to participate in the events organized by the graduate school. The progress of the research has to be reported periodically to the school.

Supervisors

The applicant should discuss the graduate school application with current or potential supervisors within Hecse. The supervisor must send a letter of recommendation (or email) that must contain the supervisor's commitment to supervise the studies of the applicant for the Hecse graduate school, and if accepted, continuously monitor the student's research work. This letter has to state the name of the applicant, the planned topic (or field) of the dissertation, the estimated date for the dissertation, and an outline of the funding plan in case the student is admitted to a non-funded adjunct position .

Recommendations

In addition to the required letter of recommendation from the supervisor, at most two other letters of recommendation can be sent to the coordinator before the deadline. They can also be emailed directly to hecse-admin@cs.helsinki.fi.

Application

Four (4) copies of the application must be submitted (the original and three other copies). They should be addressed to the Board of Hecse and contain (in English) the following items (see Application advice for some help):

Application form properly filled out and signed.
- The form is available as a PDF or word document.
- Please notice that you need to specify for how long a period you apply for funding. Hecse only admits full-time graduate students, and expects them to graduate in four years from the start of the PhD studies. The maximum funding period of Hecse is 48 months.
Letter of Introduction (max two pages), in which the applicant states his/her research interests, which unit and/or research group the applicant is associated with, the reasons for pursuing graduate studies in Hecse, and career objectives.
Research and study plan for the whole period of PhD studies (including a report of any PhD studies and research before this application). Also describe how you have contributed to included (co-authored) papers.
Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications indicating the most relevant ones.
Officially confirmed copies of all relevant diplomas (latest diploma is enough: high school, MSc or possible licentiate diploma; and any other relevant records) with official English translation unless in Finnish or Swedish.
Transcript of studies (i.e., a list of completed courses, number of credits units and grades,; opintorekisteriote/studieregisterutdrag)
Financing plan, indicating how the studies will be funded.
TOEFL certificate: For applicants not holding a Finnish Master's degree and not enrolled as a PhD student at either the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology: a certificate of a TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Copies of up to three (3) most relevant scientific paper(s) authored. The copies are not necessary for papers published in ACM or IEEE journals or conferences available in their digital libraries.

The applications and appendices will not be returned.

The applicant may be invited to an interview.

Addressee

The application with attachments, all in four copies (original plus three copies) should be sent to the Hecse Coordinator to arrive before 3.45PM on 28 September 2007. Electronic applications are not accepted.
