Application advice
Students who have already been accepted as post-graduate students by the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology can use the normal Finnish style of confirming the copies. There is no need for official confimation.
However, students who do not have a post-graduate position in either of
the participating universities MUST include officially confirmed copies.
The financing plan must indicate how the student
is going to finance his or her full-time post-graduate
studies. All applications will be
considered for adjunct position. The
best applicants (unless applying only for adjunct positions) will be
considered for funding. If the student is
applying primarily for funding from Hecse he or she should indicate this
in his/her financing plan.
Students applying for the adjunct position must give more detailed
information about financing their studies. Possible examples are: 'I will be working in a reaserch project that
allows me to concentrate on my own topic', 'I am applying for a grant from xxx',
' I have discussed with my employer about studies and he has agreed to allow me
to use xx percentage of my time to pursue my studies'. Students should be as precise
as possible in their financing plan.
This probably is the most frequently asked question: "I am studying at X using English,
do I need to take the exam?" The answer is yes, unless the student had his or her education in English.
Instead of TOEFL students can also use their GRE results.
If astudent has already been accepted as
a PhD student to either the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology,
then he or she probably has submitted proof of their language
skills. When applying to Hecse, the student can then use the same certificate
(TOEFL or something else), but shuld make it clear in the application
that he or she has already been accepted as a
post-graduate student by either university (and indicate which university).
Any professor who is a member of the board of Hecse and working at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki,
or in any of the laboratories at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Helsinki
University of Technology, is a potential supervisor. Applicants should decide which
supervisor to contact, based on their chosen topic and interests for PhD studies. This is the first test of the applicants' capabilities of
successfully pursuing
studies in the Finnish system.
The
requirements for doctoral students are found in the study guides of the universities.
Applicants should check especially the
study guide of the university they
are going to do their studies in. For HUT
the information is avalable from the Studies page
of the Department of Computer Science and
Engineering. For the University of Helsinki the information is available
from the
Studies page of Department of Computer Science.
