Organisation

The Head of the department along with one deputy head are in charge of the operations of the department. The department has a steering committee that is elected in the university elections every third year and comprises, in addition to the head, 3 professors, 3 teachers and 3 students. In 2008, Professor Hannu Toivonen was head of the department and Professor Jyrki Kivinen was his deputy.

The teaching is divided into three sub-programmes and two Master's programmes. In 2008, the sub-programmes were led by Professor Jyrki Kivinen (Algorithms and machine learning), Professor Lea Kutvonen (Distributed systems and data communications) and Professor Seppo Sippu (Software systems). The Master's programmes were headed by Professor Juho Rousu (Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics, MBI) and Professor Jussi Kangasharju (International CBU Master's Degree Programme in Information and Communication Technology). The department participates in four post-graduate schools with a designated person in charge at the department (in two cases the same person who is in charge of a post-graduate school operating at the department; in 2008, Academy Professor Heikki Mannila for ComBi and Professor Hannu Toivonen for HeCSe).

The research is ordered into research units and project groups. Two research units, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT, in cooperation with Helsinki University of Technology) and the Algodan (Algorithmic Data Analysis) Finnish Academy centre of excellence operate at the department. In addition to the research units, there are numerous research teams at the department. Professor Esko Ukkonen acted as director of both HIIT and Algodan in 2008.

The administration is divided into (1) teaching administration, in 2008 under the charge of Heads of Studies Hannu Erkiö (retired in December 2008) and Jaakko Kurhila, (2) general, staff and financial administration, in 2008 under the charge of Office Manager Tiina Väisänen, (3) administration of research and graduate schools, in 2008 under the charge of Research Coordinator Greger Lindén, and (4) the IT unit with IT Manager, Petri Kutvonen in charge in 2008. There are also designated people in charge of development of teaching, library liaison, and quality assurance.
