Information management

The teaching and research in the information-management sub-programme focus on the manipulation of large volumes of data. Typical information-management methods include traditional databases and structured representations, such as XML.

The education in this sub-programme covers database management, text and document management and language technology, information retrieval, as well as data mining and analysis. The courses of this sub-programme are designed to teach conceptual and physical data models, how to choose the information-management methods best suited to specific problems, and how to implement challenging information systems.. The method of investigating learning is used for studying the main concepts and methods in data mining. This kind of course is mainly completed in smaller groups solving problems independently.

The research in this sub-programme focuses on data mining as well as document management and language technology. A considerable part of the research is carried out under the auspices of the Algodan (Algorithmic Data Analysis) Centre of Excellence and in collaboration with HIIT. The research has developed and applied methods in projects on retrieval and analysis of biological information, management and distribution of positioning data in mobile phones, including privacy issues, mining of genetic data sets and gene mapping, and isolating information from text bodies. In the field of databases, the research has focused on method for database structures and transaction management. The online teaching environment for databases has been developed further.
