Algorithms for Broadband Internet (ABI)

Period: 1/2006-12/2008
Researchers: Jukka Manner Kimmo Raatikainen Lauri Liuhto Teemu Huovila Nuutti Varis Tommi Saviranta
Funding: Tekes

The general objective of the ABI project is to produce fundamental results on several algorithms that are essential for future broadband networking, and to develop new solutions for them. Activities of the project include design, analysis and modelling of network algorithms, development of new algorithms for traffic monitoring and analysis, experimental validation of models and protocols, and participation in standardization. This year, the research group at the CS department focused on finalizing specifications for a new distributed mesh network mobility-management protocol and a messaging protocol for network nodes. Two other topics include a high-performance implementation of the GIST protocol, and analysis of a DCCP-based VoIP service.

Web Services in Ad-Hoc and Mobile Infrastructure (WeSAHMI)

Period: 01/2006-12/2007
Researchers: Jukka Manner Antti Hulkkonen Johannes Korpela
Funding: Tekes ja yritykset

The project studies technologies for creating new types of push-based services. Key focus areas include SIP-based signalling and transport, XML-based user interfaces to services, RSS news feeds based on the push-model, and security. The project ended in December 2007 and released a number of new software applications and presented two demonstrations: a passenger service for an airline, and real-time news delivery based on pushing RSS feeds to a mobile client.
