Antti Leino's dissertation: On Toponymic Constructions as an Alternative to Naming Patterns in Describing Finnish Lake Names . Antti Leino, who works at the Department of Computer Science, defended his thesis at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Helsinki . He used computational methods for nomenclature research in his thesis work.

This summer school was attended by post-graduate students of data communications and mobile computing from the US , Japan and Finland . The keynote speaker was Professor Randy Katz of Berkeley , California , who was conferred the title of Honorary Doctor in May.
8th May – 1 st Jun Summer School on Algorithmic Data Analysis
The topic of the SADA07 summer school arranged by the department and the Hecse graduate school, algorithmic data analysis, belongs to the classics in basic computer science research. However, speakers from such companies as Google and Yahoo also participated, so everyday applications were well represented.

7th Aapo Hyvärinen granted pooled professorship in computational data analysis
The University of Helsinki has instated some five-year pool professorships where the discipline changes according to person or field. The main criteria for these professorships include the scientific credits of the proposed persons, carrying out successful research, and the scientific and societal needs of any new and promising field.

17th The regulation of gene functions is being studied with computer programs – the Medix 2007 award goes to multi-disciplinary research group
The €20,000 Medix award was granted to the research groups led by Professor Jussi Taipale and Professor Esko Ukkonen for the best research in bio-medicine or clinical research for an article published in 2006.
