The course is compulsory on the Cum laude approbatur level for students majoring in computer science, and on the Approbatur level for students minoring in computer science, and is worth 3 cu. The course will teach the basic principles of programming, using Java as the programming language. Usually, students immediately follow up this course with the course in Java programming, 2 cu.

The English exercise group will meet once a week September 20 - November 5 as follows:
2. Vesa Vainio Tuesday 14-16 DK117The exercise sessions will deal with homework from the course. The programming problems are to be solved by using the computer. The solutions should be taken to the exercise group printed on paper, and they should also be found in your home directory of the department computer system.
The successful solving of problems in the exercise group will give you points that will influence your final grade. The maximum of points is 10, which you will obtain by completing most of the problems. (The maximum of the examination is 50.)
During the first exercise session the students will be divided to study circles, consisting 3-5 students. Teacher Vesa Vainio will tell more of this in the first meeting.
After the first exercise session, students may have advice on how to use the Department's Java tools. This instruction will be given during the hour following the first exercise session in computer class B221.
Those who want to attend the same exercise group for the course Programming in Java should let the group teacher know beforehand. This information is gathered in good time before the general registration time, which starts on October 5th. Further information later.
The examination will be held on Friday, November 12 at 14-18 (2-6 pm) in the auditorium A111 of the Exactum.
The maximum points in the examination are 50. You must get at least 22 examination points and 30 points altogether to pass!
Grades are determined as follows: You may receive 50 points at the most from the exam, and 10 points from the exercise sessions.
