23It may seem contradictory if meditation tries to make the mind empty, while above, meditation was seen as learning from selected input. This is not contradictory since the point is that relative emptiness of the mind is necessary to be able to select and pay attention to mental phenomena in a way that optimizes learning about uncontrollability, etc. Without such emptying of mind, all the processing would be spent on ordinary thinking and sensory processing instead of the intended learning. For example, only with a relatively empty mind can the meditator realize how wandering thoughts are uncontrollable and impermanent, or that bodily feelings likewise just come and go.
