Related to this are the “higher-order” theories in which consciousness depends on higher-order mental representations that represent oneself as being in particular mental states (Lau and Rosenthal, 2011; Lau, 2022). For example, a fear reaction would be coded in the amygdala while the feeling of fear would be coded in the prefrontal cortex. This is a form of metacognition which will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 17.
