10Quote from Letters to Lucilius V.7, translated by R. M. Gummere. I’m here assuming “hope” refers to an expectation of reward that could lead to frustration. Likewise, Epictetus says “When I see a man anxious, I say, What does this man want?” and tells the story of a lyre player who is happy playing by himself but becomes nervous in front of an audience, apparently because he wants to be well-received by the audience (Discourses, II.13).
