The demand for broadband bandwidth of multimedia applications and the production of inexpensive hardware are driving forces for the introduction of high-speed Local Area Networks (LANs). Initial efforts aimed at using the already installed cabling and change some other parameters of the protocols. Later, new technologies were introduced. After a brief review of the cabling, topologies and standards, we discuss the high speed LAN technologies: Ethernet switching, Fast Ethernet, IEEE 802.12, FDDI and ATM. Furthermore, we discuss the internetworking issue of connecting several different LANs together and explain the use of bridges and routers.
