As you'll see, the actual number of kernel messages only come to about
128280 bytes, which is much less than my previous experiment, but it's
also, by proportion, more compressible. That shrinks to 59849 bytes.
That's 53% smaller.
My next step after this is to write a filter which locates format
strings a little more intelligently than the extractor, replaces them
properly, and readies them for compilation. I'm going to need perhaps a
bit more help with the Makefiles. One thing I tried was making %.o
depend on %.i, hoping it would use the existing %.i rule, but it didn't.
One way to do the filtering is to have .q (or whatever) files depend on
.i files which depend on .c files, and .o files depend on .q, where .q
files have the strings replaced. Oh, and, of course, I have to rewrite
printk() which I've not even bothered to LOOK at yet. :)
If you're wondering why I'm expending so much energy on shrinking the
kernel memory usage by a mere 68431 bytes, it's because I'm a geek, and
I'm having a blast. Isn't the open source movement great? :) Now,
it's time to go home to see my wife. Yes, I have one of those. :)
Here's the code table. Codes are in octal.
