Files created with bzip2/gzip directly to NFS file system gets corrupted
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
.tar.bz2 archives created directly on an NFS file system gets random
corruptions. Random bytes in the resulting file gets corrupted;
corrupted bytes are usually grouped. Corruptions happen different places
each run.
File creation could happen with "bzip2 -9c t.tar >
/path/to/nfs/t.tar.bz2" (and similar with gzip) but does not happen when
uncompressing files the same way with "bzip2 -dc t.tar.bz2 >
/path/to/nfs/t.tar".
Doing exactly the same on local filesystems (ext3) on local disks
produces no such errors.
No messages show up in log files and no corruptions happen with other
network traffic.
[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
NFS, networking
[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
2.4.19 - also tried with 2.4.18/2.4.19 combination as well as both
2.4.18.
[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
No error messages at all.
[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible)

[7.7.] Other information that might be relevant to the problem
(please look in /proc and include all information that you
think to be relevant):
Server:
# cat /etc/exports
/home/backup/carlsberg 172.16.0.3(rw,root_squash,anonuid=1003,anongid=100)
Client:
# cat /etc/fstab | grep nfs
tuborg:/home/backup/carlsberg /backup/net nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nfsvers=3 0 0
Both kernels were configured with the following NFS-related parameters:
CONFIG_NFS_FS=m
CONFIG_NFS_V3=y
# CONFIG_ROOT_NFS is not set
CONFIG_NFSD=m
CONFIG_NFSD_V3=y
CONFIG_SUNRPC=m
CONFIG_LOCKD=m
CONFIG_LOCKD_V4=y
All filesystems on block devices are ext3 mounted with "default"
parameters.

Help me help - I am totally lost; I have no idea where to look anymore;
I don't know what more information to include, so tell me what I missed.
I am no kernel hacker, but I am willing to try out patches etc. if
necessary...
TIA
/Rasmus
