2.5.26 APIC BUG when booting Xeon box

Upon compiling 2.5.26 on a 4-CPU 1.6GHz Pentium Xeon box, I get the message "kernel BUG at smpboot.c:1128!"

Below is the statement that triggers the oops:
	if (GET_APIC_ID(apic_read(APIC_ID)) != boot_cpu_physical_apicid)
		BUG();

This occurs both with Hyper-Threading on and off in the BIOS, and with CONFIG_PENTIUMIII and CONFIG_PENTIUM4.  Note that 2.4.x kernels boot fine.
