The deadline for workshop proposals has passed!
Call for Proposals for Workshops
to be held in conjunction with
9th European Software Engineering Conference (ESEC)
and
11th ACM SIGSOFT International Symposium
on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE-11)
1 - 5 September 2003
Helsinki, Finland
ESEC/FSE 2003 is soliciting proposals for workshops to be held in
conjunction with the main conference. Workshops will be held on the two
days before the conference. Prospective workshop organizers are
requested to follow the guidelines below in submitting a workshop
proposal by the submission date, and are encouraged to contact the
workshop chairs should any questions arise.
Goal.
ESEC/FSE 2003 workshops provide a forum for small groups of participants
(typically 20 to 40) to exchange opinions, advance ideas, and discuss
preliminary results on focused research topics. To foster dialog, the
ideal group size is twenty to twenty-five. Group size may range as high
as forty, but at the cost of limiting the opportunities to engage all
participants in meaningful discussions.
Workshops are not alternative forums for full research papers, and
usually restrict themselves to submission of position papers only.
Workshops should focus on fostering discussion and avoid being
presentation only; at least half the time should be devoted to discussion.
Format.
Workshops may be one, one and a half, or two days long. Prospective
workshop organizers may indicate in their workshop proposals any
scheduling preferences they have, but the acceptance of a workshop
proposal does not guarantee that the requested dates/times will be
accommodated. Scheduling and other constraints might in some cases
require that actual workshop dates and durations be changed or
shortened. We assume that submission of a workshop proposal indicates
that the prospective workshop organizers are available to run the
workshop on any of the days that ESEC/FSE 2003 has scheduled for workshops.
Review.
Workshop proposals will be reviewed by the ESEC/FSE 2003 workshop
chairs. Acceptance will be based on an evaluation of the workshop's
potential to advance the state of software engineering research and/or
practice, the timeliness and expected interest in the topic, the
organizers' ability to lead a successful workshop, and the need of
ESEC/FSE 2003 to achieve balance and synergy in its workshop and
other offerings.
Accepted workshops must adhere to the common deadlines listed below for
submission of position papers, notification of acceptance of position
papers, and preparation of the workshop proceedings.
Workshop organizers must limit the length of any requested position
papers to 7 pages.
Publication.
Workshop organizers are responsible for producing a master copy of the
workshop proceedings containing the accepted position papers. ESEC/FSE
2003 will provide support for copying the proceedings for workshop
participants.
Budget.
ESEC/FSE 2003 will not pay for registration, travel, or other
arrangements for workshop organizers or any of their invited guests. All
participants, including workshop organizers, must register.
How to Submit.
Workshop proposals should be submitted via e-mail to both workshop
chairs in two parts, each part in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).
The first part consists of a workshop title and a brief abstract,
suitable for proposal evaluation and early posting on a web site pending
production of an official call for participation or position papers. The
abstract should include full contact information for the principal organizer.
The second part provides supporting and logistical information, and
consists of the following:
- a one-page outline of the theme and goals of the workshop;
- a short statement discussing the relevance of the workshop to
the field of software engineering;
- the desired minimum and maximum number of workshop participants;
- the participant solicitation and selection process;
- a brief description of each organizer's background, including
relevant past experience in organizing workshops and contact
information;
- a preliminary version of the call for position papers the
workshop organizers intend to use;
- requested workshop date(s) and duration, and any scheduling
constraints;
- requested equipment, room capacity and organization, and other
materials.
