Practical Bioinformatics approaches various bio-computational analysis methods essential in life sciences from a practical point of view. The course consists of five modules (I-V; 2-3 cr each) organized in five different periods. Each module consists of approximately 28 hours of lectures and practical exercises in a computer class. Additionally, the modules will include homework and exam.
The course is tailored for undergraduate and graduate students studing biosciences (biology, biochemistry, medicine etc.) and assumes no previous background in bioinformatics or programming. Basic computer skills are required. The course is organized at the Biomedicum Helsinki (Haartmaninkatu 8). A maximum of 25 students will be accepted for the course.
The course consists of the following modules (please see more information on the web sites of individual modules).
- I Programming for Biologists (I period, 10.9.-25.10.2007)
- II R Language module (II period)
- III Biodatabases (III period) (module description)
- IV Microarray data analysis (IV period)
- V Gene mapping (I period, 2008)
Each module can be taken individually, but the participation in all the modules is highly recommended.
