Maturity test
Taking part in the maturity test (written exam) is a requirement for the course Scientific Writing. The maturity test is a compulsory part of the university degree.
Students completing a minor Laudatur in computer science are not obliged to take the maturity test a second time. The maturity test in the major subject is enough.
At the end of each term, an exam is arranged for everyone who has taken part in the course. The time and place for the exam is announced in the course schedule. You do not have to register for the exam if you have handed in your thesis by the deadline. If you cannot make it to the exam, you can take the maturity test at a separate exam session at a later date, but then you have to register for it separately to the group supervisor (in good time, eg on Monday the week before the exam, at the latest). You have to take the maturity test by the end of the term following the term that your thesis has been passed. It is to be recommended that you take the maturity test as soon as possible, while the contents of your thesis are still fresh in your memory!
With the supervisor's permission, the maturity test can be taken before you have handed in your thesis. In that case, the supervisor will need the same information as when applying for an extended deadline.
The maturity test should be written in the same language as the course exercises (summary, essay and thesis). This language is chosen when registering for the course, and based on the language of matriculation. Foreign students write in English.
For special reasons, the maturity test can be postponed until you have written your Master's thesis, but this is not recommended. If it is, it should still be written in the language of matriculation, and you cannot get the Bachelor's degree (LuK).
Taking the maturity test according to older degree requirements
If a student has taken the course Scientific Writing according to older degree requirements without taking the maturity test, it should be taken separately.
- If wanting to complete the BSc degree, the student should contact the person in charge of the course to arrange a new test. If possible, please bring a copy of your course thesis. The test will be arranged in connection with the department's normal exams.
- If wanting to complete the MSc (FM) degree, the maturity test will be based on the Master's thesis. In that case, the subject is set by the thesis instructor.
Characteristics of the maturity test
The subject of the maturity test is taken from the thesis. It can be the title of the whole thesis, a chapter or section title, or some theme or problem from the thesis.
The supervisor sets the subject and delivers it to the department office in good time before the test in a sealed envelope addressed to the student and with the date of the exam on it. The supervisor may change this practice in agreement with the group instructor.
You may not bring any written material to the test.
The recommended length of the maturity test is one exam paper, ie four pages, with broad margins, written on each line with neat handwriting, with a pencil.
The text should be plain. A small amount of mathematical symbols is allowed. The subject matter should be exact.
Please pay special attention to the language. It must be faultless. The text should be parsed into paragraphs. The goal is a matter-of-fact essay with an introduction, a discussion and a conclusion.
