I am seeing terrible VM performance in pre6 as well. I try doing a fresh
checkout of Mozilla, my available memory goes down to 2 megs. My mouse
starts hiccupping, and my system performance degrades noticably.

Here's meminfo in the middle of the checkout of Mozilla:
