Which 3ware driver?

I recently acquired a 3ware 5400. Should I be using the driver supplied
as a part of the 2.2.15pre19/20 kernel or the one 3ware included on
disk?

3dm, the 3ware monitoring and diagnostic tool, doesn't seem to work
with the kernel supplied 3ware driver.

If the kernel supplied 3ware driver is the correct driver to use,
how does one get notification of events, such as a drive failure?
