Registering for the course Scientific Writing
Deadline for registering
You should register for the course Scientific Writing during the previous term as follows: for the Autumn term during April and for the Spring term during November.
You can (and should) register for the course even if you have not completed all the prerequisite courses. The prerequisites will not be checked until nearer the start of the course. All the previous terms courses are included (the date of the exam is crucial, not when the grades have been given).
If you miss the deadline, you can register for a waiting list. Students on the waiting list are divided into groups at the beginning of the course, if and when those who registered on time do not fill their groups.
Students who have completed the prerequisites have prority to the course. If they do not fill their groups, students who have not completed the prerequisites may be accepted into those groups. The person in charge of the course makes the decision on this.
If you have only recently handed in an application to change your major subject to computer science, but it has not been processed yet, please register now and mention your application like you would an uncompleted course.
You can have the credits from another degree recognised instead of the course Scientific Writing. You should have the application for credit transfer processed before the start of the course. Please see the course homepage for a description of the principles for credit transfer.
Rights to participate
Only those students, who are majoring or minoring in computer science, and who have completed the compulsory lecture courses and projects in the cum laude approbatur module, except Software Engineering and its project, as well as Scientific Writing, are eligible to participate in the course Scientific Writing.
Language
The thesis and maturity test for the course Scientific Writing should in principle be written in the language in which the student wrote his or her Finnish matriculation exam (or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam), in Finnish or Swedish. In most cases this means they are written in the student's mother tongue. In other cases, please contact the person in charge of the course.
Data for the registration system
Please register for the course through the department's registration system. There are no separate workgroups in the registration system, but everyone registers for the same group. The data that is needed to place students in the correct groups is given in the course questionnaire. Some of the answers are processed automatically, so please follow the instructions carefully.
If you wish to deal with some specific topic, please say so when registering, because it will affect how the groups are formed. There will not be much room for negotiation once the course has started. This does not mean that you have to develop your own topic in order to attend the course. Just expressing one or two interesting themes, or your possible future specialisation area will be enough.
When registering, you will be required to answer the following questions:
- 1. Is any of the courses you have completed still missing from the study register? Please list them here (name of the course, when you completed it and your grade). We will check the prerequisites straight from the study register, so it is important that you tell us if any of your grades is missing.
- 2. What courses are you currently taking? When will you complete them (date of intended completion)? You may register for the course even though you should be currently taking some of the required courses. The requisite for attending the course Scientific Writing is that you have fulfilled the prerequisites during the term previous to the course (the exam date, not the grading date).
- 3. Which specialisation area or sub-programme are you thinking of choosing in your laudatur module? (1. Algorithms, 2. Intelligent systems, 3. Software engineering, 4. Distributed systems and data communications, 5. Information systems, 6. Bioinformatics and computational biology, 7. Applied computer science, 8. Teacher, 9. Computer mathematician, 10. I do not know, 11. I am not taking the laudatur module) If, for example, you are taking the software technology specialisation area, please answer 3.
- 4. Give at least four (4) topic numbers in your order of preference, separated by commas. The topic numbers are 1-28. We will try to take your preference into account when dividing up the groups. Sample answer: Assume that the applicant's has given as his first preference the topic "data communications", the second is "pattern recognition", the third is "testing" and the fourth one "artificial intelligence". Thus, the applicant's answer to this question is 13, 3, 12, 5. If you wish, you can give more than four topics. The names of the topics are listed in the registration system as well as the in the registration instructions on the course webpage.
- 5. Language? Answer either Finnish, Swedish or English, as required. Please see the registration instructions on the course homepage for the rules for choosing the correct language.
- 6. Other You may want to write something more about your interests, or anything else about completing the course. We will try to take it all into account when dividing up the groups.
- 7. Please give your e-mail address, where you will be available before the start of the course. We will announce who has been accepted for the course and when the first meeting will be held by e-mail. Remember to keep up with your e-mail!
We will process the answers automatically, so please answer question no. 4 carefully according to instructions. Your answer should consist of numbers between 1 and 28 with commas in between, and nothing else. There should be no reasons, explanations or group names etc in the answer to no.4.

Division into groups
The participants will be divided into groups of six at the most, according to their preferences. There may be several topics in each group. The topics have been chosen from the department's research and teaching in the specialisation areas, so the groups are loosely tied to the specialisation areas. The topics of some areas overlap.
The group you are placed in now will not affect your later studies or the specialisation area you choose.
The applicants will be divided into groups according to the answers they have given while registering for the course. The time of registration will not affect the division into groups in any way. We will not divide the groups and check the prerequisites until after the registration deadline.
Confirmation of participation
Because the lectures are given only in Finnish, those students requiring English tutoring and who have been accepted to the course will be asked to confirm their participation by e-mail a couple of weeks before the start of the course.
